Wisconsin > Great Midwest Marathon & Half Marathon Run - Endurance Festival
Elkhart Lake, WI

Date

Sunday, May 30, 2010

Event Details

Featuring six events spread over the course of three days over the Memorial Day weekend, the Great Midwest Marathon & Endurance Festival makes its debut in May of 2010 on the springtime race calendar here in the Chicagoland area, and is designed as a way to bring a wide variety of endurance athletes -- including runners, inline skaters, road cyclists and mountain bikers -- together in one event.

The marathon and half marathon for runners -- there is also a marathon and a half marathon for inline skaters, which also takes place on Sunday -- takes runners along a mixture of rolling hills and lengthy flat stretches, with a course that starts out flat for those running the half marathon and ends up hillier as runners make their way into Elkhart Lake for the race finish.

Unlike those running the full, 26.2-mile marathon, participants running the 13.1-mile half marathon follow a point-to-point race route that starts at the Wade House Historic Site in nearby Greenbush, a stagecoach inn whose roots as a popular spot to stop and rest for the night for travelers between Sheboygan and Fond du Lac dates back to the 1850s.

From there, those running the half follow the course from the Wade House all the way back in to the finish line near Elkhart Lake, while those running the full marathon run an out-and-back course that starts and finishes in Elkhart Lake. Along the course, runners will get to see much of why this area is a popular getaway spot for people living in Chicago and nearby Milwaukee, from its peaceful rolling green hills and country roads to its lakes, ponds and quaint town and shopping areas.

Race Weather & Climate

Located in central eastern Wisconsin, roughly 60 miles north of Milwaukee and about 20 miles west of the Lake Michigan shore, the city of Elkhart Lake typically experiences mild to moderately warm weather in the late spring, with occasional rain. On the day of the race (May 30), the city's average high temperature is 72°F and its average low is 50°F, while rainfall totals average just over 3.6 inches for the month.
