The spring of 2011 brings the second annual running of the Mount Pleasant
Half Marathon, a 13.1-mile race that will be joined by both a 5K for
runners and walkers and a one-mile fun run, here along the shoreline of
Lake Michigan, in this village of roughly 26,000 that is situated
between Chicago to the south and Milwaukee to the north.
marathon will become part of an active local athletic events calendar,
which also includes the EVP Beach Volleyball Tour and National
Championships as well as the Spirit of Racine Triathlon (now the
Ironman 70.3 Racine), which takes place in July.
From the starting line near Mount Pleasant's Case High School, near the intersection of of Washington Avenue and Oakes Road, runners follow a
clockwise out-and-back loop course that takes them northward into the
village, along a course that unfolds along a mixture of flat stretches
(particularly in the race's early going) and a few hilly stretches,
especially between mile markers 3 and 4, and then again between miles 7
Along the race route, runners and walkers can expect to encounter
terrain that alternates among residential neighborhood areas, wide-open
farm fields and tree-lined roads through the countryside. The last two
miles of the race feature some of the area's most scenic natural
beauty, as the race takes runners through the Mount Pleasant Nature
Preserve just before taking them back to the finish at the high school,
where participants complete the race on the school's stadium track.
The Mount Pleasant race is part of a series of half marathon events
around the country known as the USRA Half Marathon Series, which also includes events in Columbia, S.C.; Bentonville, Ark.; Lexington,
Ky.; Council Bluffs, Iowa; Worcester, Mass.; Joplin, Mo.; Lafayette,
Ind.; Lancaster, Penn.; and Clarksville, Tenn.
