Wisconsin > River to Ridge Half Marathon, 5K & 10K Fun Run
Janesville, WI • Saturday, September 14, 2013 • Course Map
From the banks of the Rock River where the race starts to the top of the ridge that runs through the Robert Cook Memorial Arboretum just to the north of the city, this is a race that lives up to its name quite literally, as Janesville's River to Ridge Half Marathon, 10K & 5K makes its 3rd annual running in the waning days of summer in mid-September 2013.
Runners start the race in Janesville's Riverside Park, which looks out onto the Rock River and is part of this southern Wisconsin city's more than 2,000 acres of public parks, making it the city with the highest per capita acreage of public parkland anywhere in the state. From the starting line at the far pavilion inside the park, the half marathon route then heads south along Riverside Park Road.
Mostly flat for the first mile, the course begins a small uphill just as runners are nearing the first mile marker, just as they're reaching the intersection of Parkside Drive and Washington Street. Here, the course turns right and heads north along Washington Street, in the direction of the Cook Memorial Arboretum, where the course will then head through tree-shaded roadways as it heads north and then makes a turn south to head into the more rural areas just outside town.
Before runners reach the country roads in the middle section, however, they'll climb up the "ridge" portion of the race between the 2nd and 3rd mile markers, a steep and challenging hill that rises more than 110 feet in elevation between about half-way between miles 2 and 3 and the 3rd mile marker, along the tree-lined portion of the roadway that runs through the forest inside the arboretum. After a couple more (and much smaller) hills, the course then flattens out by the time runners reach the mile 4 marker, taking them gradually downhill after that.
The next stretch of the course features mostly gently rolling hills over the next few miles, as the route makes a big square-shaped stretch along County Road A, Little Road, Mineral Point Road and Austin Road. This last stretch along miles 8 and 9 is mostly a gradual uphill, bringing runners back toward the forest and the ridge they'll climb one last time as they make the return route back to Riverside Park. The downhill is equally steep on the way back, as runners then follow the same route back in to the finish line that they ran earlier on the way out.
