Set for its inaugural running in the waning days of summer here in this small southwestern Wisconsin city known perhaps best for its boating, fishing and water recreation -- its fishing especially has helped it earn the nickname "the sunfish capital of the world" -- the Run Western Wisconsin Half Marathon & 5K takes runners along 13.1 miles of the Great River State Trail between the cities of Trempealeau and Onalaska.
The trail, which stretches 24 miles along this section of the Upper Mississippi River and Lake Onalaska, has a surface made up of crushed limestone and was built along what was once the Chicago-Northwestern railroad line. Today, it's a multi-use biking, walking, running and jogging trail in the warm-weather months, and a snowshoeing, snowmobiling and cross-country skiing trail in the winter months.
Runners will start the half marathon in nearby Trempealeau and follow a point-to-point course that unfolds along a mostly flat course along the trail, with just a few rolling hills thrown in at the beginning, around the midpoint and near the finish line. Along the way, runners will be in sight of the Mississippi River for most of the race, and will pass by scenes ranging from historic Indian mounds to buffalo farmlands and prairies.
Organized by Rapid Running Event Management, the race is a USATF-certified event and starts at 7:30 AM for those running in the half marathon, and 7:45 AM for those running the 5K. Runners will have 4 hours to complete the course, organizers add.
