Set for its inaugural running just as summer is transitioning to fall here in the state's northeastern corner, with national forests and the Black Hills of South Dakota just a short drive away, Gillette's Run Wyoming Half Marathon, 5K & Kids 1-Mile race takes runners on a tour of both this city's downtown and the countryside areas just to the south of the city.
Runners will start the out-and-back course for the race at Gillette's CAM-PLEX, an 1,100-acre multi-event facility that hosts events ranging from rodeos to RV and motorcycle rallies throughout the year. Located just off the intersection of Highway 51 and Interstate 90, the complex's park facilities will serve as the starting and finish line area, where runners will start the race at 7:30 AM.
From there, the course then heads west into southern Gillette, with turns along Martingale Drive, South Garner Lake Road and Boxelder Road, which brings runners west toward the city. Where Boxelder meets up with Country Club Road and Butler-Spaeth Road, runners turn right and head north on Butler-Spaeth for roughly a mile before turning again, this time left onto East 9th Street.
The turn onto 9th is followed shortly by turns again onto Gurley Avenue and East 7th Street, which takes runners along a straightaway stretch that lasts for a little over a mile and features what is probably the race's steepest uphill stretch, just as runners are heading up to the mile 5 marker. This stretch also brings runners through block after block of residential neighborhoods, along tree-lined streets and within just a block or two of Gillette's Mount Pisgah Cemetery.
The next stretch of the half marathon route brings runners back under the Interstate once again toward the neighborhoods that lie just south of the city, along Boxelder Road, Lakeway Road and Ridgecrest Drive. After a couple of miles along West 4-J Road, runners then turn right and head back onto Boxelder, where they begin the final few miles that take them along the route they ran at the early going, all the way back to the finish line at the CAM-PLEX.
