Saturday, June 24, 2017 • American Fork, UT • Course Map
Set for its 7th annual running this year just south of the Salt Lake City area, the American Fork Canyon Half Marathon & 5K takes runners on a long, gradual downhill point-to-point course, which starts in the mountains just outside the city and finishes in the valley at American Fork High School.
Over 2,100 participants crossed the finish line in both races combined in 2016, including over 970 in the half marathon alone.
Organized by the locally-based Intermountain Healthcare and designed as a benefit to raise money for cancer patients in the local area in need of treatment but who cannot afford the full cost of their care, the race will take runners through a range of scenery, topography and elevations, as it starts along the shores of Tibble Fork Reservoir in American Fork Canyon, and runs all the way down in to the city.
While runners should of course be ready for warmer temperatures once they reach the lower elevations, they should note that temperatures at the starting line (and the starting time is 6:00 AM) will be significantly cooler at Timpanogos Cave where the race begins.
From the starting line at Tibble Fork, runners then head down westward into the canyon along American Fork Canyon Road, a long straightaway stretch that takes them through these Wasatch Mountains that border the Salt Lake City area.
There will be stunning views of the nearby North and Boxelder peaks along this stretch of the race, which follows a long, gradual descent from the elevation of just under 6,400 feet above sea level at the start, down to about 4,600 feet by the time runners reach the finish line at the high school.
Along the route, which follows a creek as it winds through the canyon, runners next enter the more residential stretch of the course as they head into Cedar Hills, where they exit the canyon road and then head onto the paved biking and walking trail that winds through Cedar Hills Golf Course.
The trail continues past Lone Peak High School, the LDS Mount Timpanogos Temple and Art Dye Park before bringing runners on to the finish line at the high school, where your family, friends, volunteers and community members will cheer you on as you cross the finish line on the track and field facility.
