The high mountain vistas, gorgeous natural beauty and brilliant blue skies of southern Utah are on display for the runners who head out to this small, remote city for the Beaver Canyon Marathon and Half Marathon, which is set for its 5th annual running this summer.
Described as “a hidden gem of high altitude peaks, mountain canyons, alpine lakes and stunning terrain,” the Tushar Mountains of southern Utah lie within the Fishlake National Forest and feature
Runners will need to be ready for a high-elevation run, as the starting line lies along the highway from the mountains and runs westward into nearby Beaver, where you’ll start at just over 8,000 feet above sea level.
From there, the next 11 1/2 miles wind through the mountains and canyons, dropping some 2,000 feet by the time you reach the finish at Pioneer Park.
(Note the early start time for the race — 6:00 a.m. — which means that you’ll be taken by bus from the finish line area at Pioneer Park to the starting line. You’ll have 6 hours to complete the marathon as well as the half marathon.)
Race Weather & Climate
Located in Utah’s southwestern corner, roughly 200 miles southeast of Salt Lake City, the city of Beaver typically sees warm and usually dry weather in August, which is also the area’s sunniest month of the year, typically bringing 12 hours of sunshine each day.
On race day (Aug. 3), the average high is typically just over 80ºF and the average low is around 55ºF.
