The green, tree-covered hills and mountains of the Cache National Forest to the north and the snow-capped peaks of the Wasatch Mountains to the east frame this small town that lies in Utah’s Morgan Valley, roughly an hour’s drive from Salt Lake City, and plays host to the 12th annual Morgan Valley Marathon, Half Marathon, 10K & 5K this year.
Situated at just above 5,000 feet in the mountains to the northeast of Salt Lake City, Morgan offers some truly breathtaking scenery — for a look at what your surroundings will be like at the race, check out this photo — and the race organizers have designed an out-and-back course for both the full and the half marathons that will take runners along the edges of the mountains that surround the valley without incorporating too many of its hills.
All three races start and finish on the Morgan County Fairgrounds, which lie just off the bend in Interstate 84, at the end of Commercial Street. From there, runners in the half marathon follow what is roughly a clockwise loop route out from the fairgrounds and into the residential neighborhoods that line the edges of the valley, right up against the mountains on both sides.
While you’re out on the long middle portion of the race that takes the field south along State Street and north along Morgan Valley Drive, be on the lookout for perhaps the city’s most recognizable landmark, a large white “M” placed in the green mountains looking out over the valley.
If you feel like you’ve seen it before, then there’s a good chance you’re a film buff of some bad movies — the 1990 horror cult classic Troll 2, which has often shown up on “worst movies ever” lists through the years, was filmed here, and the “M” can be seen in the movie.
The race features early starts for all three races — 5:30 AM for the 26.2-mile full marathon, 6:30 AM for the 13.1-mile half marathon, and a 7:00 AM and 7:15 AM start respectively for those participating in the 10K and 5K runs, largely to beat the heat on what will no doubt later be a hot day out in the sun here in the northern Utah mountains.
