Sunday, May 7, 2023 • Sequim, WA • Course Map
Two hours northwest of Seattle lies Sequim, a town of almost 7,000, that’s home to the inaugural Sequim Irrigation Festival Half Marathon on May 7, 2023. Sequim doesn’t get nearly as much attention as it deserves. The city is nestled against the Sequim Bay, while adjacent to the wettest temperate rainforests in United States, experiences as much rainfall as Los Angeles, earning its nickname The Blue Hole of Sequim. If you’re a fan of shades of flowers, the city is also the Lavender Capital of North America and is known for its Dungeness crab.
The House of Seven Brothers seems like the place to stop after your race – one cup of cooked crab contains 21 grams of protein. A perfect treat for aching muscles.
The course starts at the Dragon Gates in front of the Gatekeeper’s Castle at Troll Haven Bandy Farms. Troll Haven is a magical, mystical sanctuary that occupies 200 acres along Discovery Bay in Gardiner, Washington. The start of the course is downhill and you’ll run by the water along Old Gardner Beach road before your run through the farm meeting Olympic Discovery Trail, a 135-mile trail of non-motorized paths.
Two sizable hills in the first few miles but glorious downhill stretches in the middle and enjoy a downhill finish. The Discovery Trail is paved with the exception of one short dirt portion in the middle. The trail will run through the Jamestown S’Klallam Tribal Center with beautiful displays of native art and totem poles. It will follow and wind past Discovery Bay with views of the water before dipping into Sequim Bay State Park. The park is full of beautiful forest and green moss. The Discovery Trail winds up to White Feather Way where you will pop out on the outskirts of Sequim before dipping into the Sequim Dungeness Valley.
Enjoy your downhill finish as you approach Carrie Blake Park and the finish line. The Carrie Blake Park will be hosting Innovation Arts and Crafts Fair with live entertainment all day, family fun days, a beer and wine garden, food, and activities for the entire family.
