The Milwaukee Half Marathon isn’t just a race — it’s one event in a weekend full of events for runners of every level. Founded in 2015 as the Milwaukee Running Festival, the weekend features a full marathon, half marathon, and 5K, all of which take runners on a scenic tour of Milwaukee.
The half marathon (along with the full marathon) begins at 7:00 AM sharp at the Fiserv Forum in downtown Milwaukee, home of the NBA’s Milwaukee Bucks and a frequent stop for musicians and performance artists. From there, runners head east across the Juneau Avenue bridge over the Milwaukee River and weave their way south through Milwaukee’s East Town neighborhood, past the Milwaukee Art Museum, and north along Lincoln Memorial Drive.
This section of the race features a couple of Lake Michigan waterfront views before turning left past North Point Tower and weaving around Lake Park. Along with the views, this area also features the largest hill of the course.
There’s a detour before heading around Lake Park, though, which takes runners on a roughly 1.6-mile stretch out and back along East Newberry Road, turning around at Riverside Park before heading back around Lake Park and continuing south, this time coasting downhill along the lakefront.
Runners then retrace their steps south through East Town and cross the Milwaukee River, this time across the Wisconsin Avenue bridge and completing a two-mile out-and-back west across Wisconsin Avenue. This out-and-back leads runners toward Marquette University in the University Hill neighborhood, past historic academic buildings and then parting with the full marathon course as the full marathoners continue west through the rest of the campus.
But it’s back east along Wisconsin Avenue for the half marathoners, recrossing the bridge and heading north along Water Street before crossing the Milwaukee River one last time and dashing across the finish line at the Fiserv Forum. A finish line festival awaits back at the Forum, where finishers can celebrate with their family and friends for the rest of the morning and continue into the afternoon.
