Wyoming’s Wind River Mountains serve as the backdrop for this beautifully scenic running event that will celebrate its 39th annual running on Independence Day, and serves as a fundraiser for the Lander Community Foundation’s Challenge for Charities.
From the starting line at Centennial Park on Main Street in the town of Lander, which lies just in the shadow of the mountains to the west, the race follows a course made up of gently rolling hills along the foothills of the mountain range.
Open to both runners and walkers, the race is run along paved surfaces throughout the race.
From the start at Centennial Park, runners follow a course that leads west along Main Street to Baldwin Creek Road, which they take for the next 11 miles (turning onto Squaw Creek Road about half-way into the race) back toward the finish in town.
For a race that takes place in mountainous country, runners will experience only moderate changes in elevation, as the course has a total elevation change of about 640 feet.
Proceeds from the race will go to benefit the Lander Community Foundation’s Challenge for Charities, which plans to distribute the funds raised to over 20 local non-profit organizations and charities.
