Lake Mills, WI

Event Details

Run along the neighborhood streets and country roads of this town that was once itself called Tyranena, or "sparkling waters" in the local native American language in this region, the Tyranena Beer Run offers both a "1/2 barrel" (13.1-mile) and a "1/6 barrel" (4.3-mile) run for the several hundred runners who show up for the race each fall -- more than 1,400 crossed the finish line in both races combined at the race's fall 2009 running. An out-and-back loop route, the race also takes runners across a combination of paved surfaces as well as gravel trail in the second half of the race.

From the starting line at the Tyranena Brewing Company on Owen Street, the course for the race follows a counter-clockwise loop around town and around Rock Lake just to the west of town, starting with stretches along Owen Street, Mulberry Street and County Highway B. Once they're on Highway B, runners then begin the part of the course that takes them nearly all the way around the lake, including turns onto Shorewood Hills Road, Cedar Lane and Elm Point Road. These miles along the course are some of the race's most scenic stretches, as runners pass within sight of the lakeshore for much of the way around.

After making their way around the lake, runners hit the trail portion of the race as Elm Point intersects with the Glacial Drumlin Trail, a cycling- and running-friendly trail that winds through 52 miles of southern Wisconsin, all the way from the town of Cottage Grove to the Fox River Sanctuary in the city of Waukesha. This stretch of the race features a mix of sandy gravel with tree-lined trails all along the way, a long flat straightaway that takes participants to the Spur Trail and then meets up with local roads in town again for the last few miles of the race.

Runners finish the 13.1-mile "half barrel" run by trekking up Industrial Drive, Highway B and Highway V for the home stretch toward the finish line back at the brewery on Owen Street. Organizers add that while there are some hills along the course, much of the rest of it is fast and flat, especially the sections along the Glacial Drumlin Trail and the Spur Trail. And because its start and finish lines are located at a brewery, all entrants must be 21 years old or older to participate, unless accompanied by a parent while on the grounds of the brewery.

Race Weather & Climate

Located in the southernmost part of the state, between the larger cities of Madison and Milwaukee, the town of Lake Mills typically experiences cold -- and sometimes very cold -- weather conditions in the mid-fall season, and drier weather than in the late summer months. In November, average monthly temperatures range between 44°F and 28°F, while precipitation amounts average around 2.39 inches for the monht.
