Event Details

Nestled among the foothills of the Berkshire Mountains in northwest Connecticut, the roughly 4,000 residents of the town of Washington play host to the Nutmeg State Half Marathon & 10K, a relatively new race on the state's road race calendar that marked its third annual running in the spring of 2009. With a course that unfolds through one of the state's most picturesque towns that typifies New England-style scenery, this race takes runners through the town and along country roads through rolling hills, farmland and land preserves.

The race -- the event's full title is the Nutmeg State Half Marathon & 10K Eco-friendly Charity Race -- is probably best described as an out-and-back course whose start and finish lines lie within a stone's throw of one another, with the starting line on School Street and the finish line on River Road. From the start near Washington Primary School, runners follow Bee Brook Road nearly three miles northward all the way to the intersection (and the race's first turnaround point) with Litchfield Turnpike.

Once they turn around and head all the way back down Bee Brook Road to near the start, runners then turn north and head up Calhoun Street to Ives Road. After running along Ives for a short stretch, runners hit the second turnaround point, where they pivot and then run back southward along the same road they've just run. Following the course Cook Street as it turns into River Road, runners follow River all the way to Lower Church Hill Road, where they hit the race's third and final turnaround point and then begin heading back along River Road toward the finish line.

Race Weather & Climate

Located in western Connecticut, about 90 miles from New York City, the town of Washington Depot typically experiences mild to cool (and sometimes cold) weather conditions in the mid-spring season, with relatively even precipitation throughout the year. In April, average monthly temperatures range between 57°F and 32°F, while rainfall totals average around 4.2 inches for the month.
