Details
Though in recent years this event has also featured a full 26.2-mile
marathon, Maryland's Ocean City road race is now simply the Ocean City
Half Marathon & 5K, which brought more than 340 runners out for
both races combined at the event's spring 2008 running along the
stretch of land in southeastern Maryland between the Isle of Wight Bay
and Chincoteague Bay.
A point-to-point race that starts on the waterfront at the Ocean City
Pier and ends 13.1 miles later near the center of the Assateague Island
National Seashore, the Ocean City Half Marathon takes runners on a
course that never strays far from the nearby
seashore, with plenty of wind and whipping sand. From the starting line
near the Ocean City Pier, runners follow a course that takes them past
several of the boardwalk area's carnival rides and along a stretch of
the Ocean City Boardwalk itself.
The race also takes runners over two big bridge crossings, first across
the Route 50 bridge from Ocean City over to the mainland in the early
part of the race and later, the Verrazano Bridge from the mainland back
over toward the beach areas, to the finish line at Assateague Island.
There on Assateague, runners may catch a glimpse of the national
seashore park's ample wildlife as they finish their run, including
sitka deer and wild horses.
