Event Details

Named the nation's best walking race event for 2008 by none other than Walk Magazine, the New Albany Walking Classic Half Marathon & 10K offers something truly unique among American road races in that it's an event designed especially for walkers, from competitive race walkers to recreational walkers. The race follows a scenic course through the streets of downtown New Albany, a suburban community just outside the Columbus metro area, and will feature a 13.1-mile half marathon distance for the first time this year.

The out-and-back race starts and finishes on Market Street, between East Dublin Granville Road and West Main Street, and the same course is used by participants in both the 10K and the half marathon for the first six-plus miles of the race. From the start at Market Street, the race takes the field in a southward direction for the first three miles, through town along Yantes Drive, Greensward Road and Lambton Park Road through the lush, green, tree-lined New Albany Country Club area.

As walkers make their way around the golf course along Lambton Park Road, they make the turn and begin heading north on Brandon Road, staying close to the golf course as they shift onto Baughman Grant, and then heading across the golf path that crosses the course to connect again back with Greensward and trek back into toward the starting line. Once they reach the 6 mile marker just before the starting line, half-marathoners will continue on for another 6.5 miles while the 10K participants will enjoy the finish line festivities.

Along some parts of the course -- particularly on the stretches along Ogden Woods and Johnstown Road -- auto traffic will be permitted, so walkers will need to heed race organizers' signals on which side of the road to remain. Several other stretches along the course, however, are closed to traffic and therefore have no restrictions for the side of the road you'll need to stay on.

Race organizers intend the race to serve as a vehicle to promote active walking as part of a healthy lifestyle, and keep the focus on this being a walkers-only event rather than a running and walking event, which often can leave the walking competitors feeling a little like second banana to the marquee running events. Prospective walkers are encouraged to register early, as the half-marathon will be limited to 1,000 walkers (and 2,500 for the 10K).

Race Weather & Climate

Mild to moderately warm conditions, with drier weather than the previous few months, are the norm in the late summer and early fall in the New Albany area, which lies about 10 miles northeast of Columbus. In September, average area temperatures range between 77°F and 56°F, while rainfall amounts average around 2.92 inches for the month.
