Set for its fifth annual running this winter after just over 260 runners crossed the finish line last year, the aptly named Whiskey Tango Foxtrot Half unfolds along the winding trails inside Northeast Park, which lies just north of the small town of Gibsonville, just a short drive from nearby Greensboro.
The 374-acre park where the race takes place features several miles of biking, hiking and equestrian trails, and it’s those trails you’ll run during the race, which moves from an afternoon start last year to a morning start for this year’s race.
Runners will begin inside the park near the aquatic center, and from there head out first along the park’s roads for roughly the first half-mile of the race. Then you’ll head onto the winding trails, which you’ll stay on for the rest of the course as you wind your way through the forests.
Organizers say to come prepared for anything — there may be water in streams and creeks that’s as low as 6 inches deep or as high as 2 1/2 feet deep, depending on whether the area has received rain or not in the days and weeks leading up to the race.
You’ll run a double-loop route through the park, crossing over the Reedy Fork River twice and running alongside Buffalo Creek in the early and later miles of the race. There will be “some great beer and an awesome finisher’s medal” at the finish line, organizers add.
The organizers say also that the medal will come in handy when friends ask you “Whiskey Tango Foxtrot were you thinking racing a trail half marathon that crosses a creek at the end of February?!”
