The second in a series of seven half marathon races staged from March through November in some of the country’s biggest cities — including Atlanta, Chicago, Miami Beach, Boston and Fort Lauderdale — New York’s 13.1 Queens Half Marathon made its debut in the spring of 2009, on a course that takes runners and walkers around some of the Queens borough’s most notable tourist sites and attractions.
Both races in the event, which includes a half marathon and a 5K, are open to runners and walkers, and start in Queens at Flushing Meadows Corona Park, the home of the Queens Zoo and the Queens Museum of Art, and the site of both the 1939 and the 1965 Worlds Fair.
From there, runners will follow a course that winds through the Flushing Meadows Park, past sites like the National Tennis Center and Arthur Ashe Stadium (where the U.S. Open tennis tournament is played every summer) as well as Citi Field, the home of Major League Baseball’s New York Mets.
Though it’s filled with rolling hills, the course for the New York 13.1 Marathon never has any major elevation changes — the lowest the course gets is to a few feet above sea level (we’re close to the water here, remember) and the highest it gets is about 25 feet above sea level.
Runners as well as walkers will have three and a half hours to finish the race, which will be limited to 5,000 entrants. The race also will serve as a fundraiser for Team World Vision, a non-profit organization that seeks to improve the lives of children and communities in Africa.
More than 1,100 runners crossed the finish line at the race’s 2014 running, including just over 900 finishers in the half marathon alone.
Race Weather & Climate
Springtime weather conditions in the New York City area can still be quite cool as the seasons are changing in late March, and runners should be prepared for rainy, cold weather as well as sunny, mild conditions.
In March, temperatures average between 32°F and 48°F — on the day of the race (March 21), the average low is 34°F and the average high is 49°F — while precipitation amounts average just over 4 inches for the month.
