Overview

Saturday, July 4, 2015 • Copperton, UT • Course Map

You guessed it — it’s all about the bacon at the 13 Miles of Bacon, “not your average half marathon” according to the race organizers, who have put together what must be one of the country’s only races where you get to eat a slice of bacon for every mile you run. Runners start the race at Copperton Park in the small village of Copperton, which lies between the Bingham Canyon copper mine up in the nearby Oquirrh Mountains and Salt Lake City to the northeast, roughly a half-hour’s drive away. From the starting line inside the park next to its gazebo and tennis courts, runners exit the park and begin the one-mile loop that unfolds along Hillcrest Street, Dryfork Road, Bingham Highway and Apex Road. They’ll run that same loop 13 times before they head back into the park to cross the finish line. Along the way, there will be one aid station stocked with — you guessed it again! — bacon. Every runner will get the chance to eat a slice of bacon at the aid station, and for every slice you’ll get to cut 30 seconds off your final race finish time. The organizers add that there’s no requirement for eating the bacon — you can let it pass by uneaten if you like. “We understand, it might not sit well,” they add in their official race website. But if you do eat it, you have to keep it down in order to keep the 30-second reductions off your finishing time — “no spitting it out when you get 50 yards down the street,” they add. After the race, there’s a big breakfast waiting for everyone, they add — eggs, hash browns, pancakes and more bacon for the runners, their family and friends.
