The rolling hills, wooded forests, wide-open meadows, sculpted gardens and trails that wind along the Sangomon River here in central Illinois serve as the setting for the all-new Allerton Trails Half Marathon & 10K, which makes its 9th annual running on the state’s running calendar this year.
Runners will make their way during the race along the trails that wind through the 1,500-acre Robert Allerton Park and Retreat Center near Monticello, a small city of about 5,000 residents that lies between Decatur and Champaign, Ill.
The trail run will feature an out-and-back route that starts and finishes near the park’s Allerton House, the manor house that formed the centerpiece of the Farms, the country estate built by Robert Allerton and his son John back in the 1920s and 1930s.
For the race, runners will make their way long a combination of several kinds of terrain and trails — riverside trails along the Upper Sangomon River, along double-track trails through the forests inside the park, through rolling meadows and through the statuary gardens the park is famous for, including its Walled Garden, Peony Garden, Triangle Parterre Garden and Fu Dog Garden, among others.
Scheduled starting time for the race is 9:00 AM, and organizers note that 100 percent of the proceeds from the race will go to the Illinois chapter of the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
Organizers note that they’ll prepare a couple of routes for the half marathon in the weeks before the race, and choose the one to be used for the race about a week prior.
Race Weather & Climate
Located in central Illinois, about 150 miles southwest of Chicago and roughly 45 miles southeast of Bloomington, Ill., Monticello typically sees warm weather in August with mild mornings, as temperatures range from the mid-60s to the low 80s. Rainfall is a possibility in August, with 3.1 inches of rain on average for the month.
On race day (Apr. 22), the average low is 63ºF and the average high is 81ºF.
