Overview

Set against the backdrop of San Francisco Bay, the Angel Island Half Marathon and 10K invite runners to tackle two scenic loops around this historic island on Saturday, August 23, 2025. Hosted at Ayala Cove and limited to just 400 participants, the event delivers a trail-running experience that combines panoramic views, heritage, and a manageable, intimate field.

📍 History & Setting

First launched in 1989, this race has grown steadily, preserving its small-scale, wilderness vibe. Almost the entire course winds through dirt and single-track trails—about 95% for the half marathon—with unspoiled ridgelines and shaded forest paths traversing lowland to high point at Mount Caroline Livermore (~790 ft).

🛣️ Course Details

  • Loop format: Full half = two loops of the 10 K circuit; single loop for 10K participants.
  • Elevation gain: ~630 ft per loop, totaling ~1,260 ft over the half—expect sustained climbs and rolling descents.
  • Surface: Primarily natural trail with minimal pavement, offering a true off-road experience.

⏱️ Race Logistics & Support

  • Start time: Ferry departs Tiburon at ~8:00 AM; half marathon begins ~8:30 AM; course cut-off is 3.5 hours (16 min/mi).
  • Aid: Two stations—one at mid-loop (~mile 7) and one at the start/finish—stocked with water, sports drinks, and snacks; port-a-potties available at Ayala Cove.
  • Entry fee: $100 for half marathon (includes ferry ride); youth price around $45–55.
  • Bib pickup: Options by mail, or race-morning collection at Tiburon dock from 6:45–7:30 AM.

🌟 What Makes It Special

This race transcends typical seaside runs. Participants traverse an island marked by Coast Miwok heritage, Spanish colonial sites, military forts, and rugged beauty. With historic intrigue, sweeping bay and city vistas, and a curated, low-volume event, it’s a destination half for trail lovers and Bay Area adventurers alike.

In summary, the Angel Island Half Marathon is a rare blend of natural beauty, historic charm, and small-event intimacy. It’s the perfect choice for runners seeking a meditative, scenic trail challenge with iconic Bay Area views and a ferry-access twist.
