runsignup blueOrganized as a tune-up and preparation run for February’s annual Mercedes Marathon and Half Marathon in Birmingham, the Anniston Runners Club McLellan Park Medical Mall “Half Naked” Half Marathon takes runners on an out-and-back loop course through the Fort McLellan U.S. Army base, which lies just to the northeast of downtown, and a short drive from the state line that divides Alabama and Georgia.

Called the “Half Naked” race thanks to the fact that no trophies are awarded, the event usually calls out the hardiest, most dedicated runners, as it is often run in cold, blustery conditions and sometimes with wintry precipitation in the air or on the ground.

Just over 40 runners crossed the finish line in the race’s 2018 running, which starts and finishes within Fort McLellan at the McLellan Park Medical Mall, which is located on Town Center Drive on the base.

From there — the scheduled starting time for the race is 8:00 AM — runners make their way along paved roads around the base, making what could be roughly described as a U-shaped course that stretches from the medical mall around streets and blocks through Fort McLellan, almost all the way around to where runners started.

Once there, at about the 6.55-mile point in the race, runners will then make the turn and retrace their steps along the route they’ve just run, all the way back to the medical mall for the race finish.

Entry into the race includes a discounted hot breakfast after the race, whose proceeds are used to help fund the Annison Runners Club’s other events throughout the year.
