More than 2,000 runners, walkers and volunteers descend on Syracuse’s Long Branch Park and the surrounding park environs around Onondaga Lake each year for the Arc of Onondaga Half Marathon, run to raise funds and awareness about the organization’s mission to help those with developmental disabilities.
The race, which also includes a 5K, a 3K fun walk and a 1-mile Family Fun Walk, celebrates its 21st annual running in 2015, and takes runners and walkers on a fast and largely flat course through nearby Liverpool and along the banks of Onondaga Lake Park.
The scheduled starting time for the half marathon is 9:00 AM, followed by the 5K start at 9:10 AM. The course closes 3 hours, 45 minutes later at 12:45 PM.
For the first time in its history, the race opened the field in 2007 to participants with wheelchairs and other assistive devices, who competed for places and prizes along the same USA Track & Field-certified course as the rest of the field — a tradition that continues today.
Race Weather & Climate
Nestled along the northern shoreline of Onondaga Lake in central New York state, about 5 miles northwest of Syracuse and roughly 250 miles northwest of New York City, Liverpool typically sees mild to moderately warm weather in September, which has brought record temperatures here as low as 25°F (in 1947) and as high as 98°F (in 1939).
On race day (Sept. 12), the average low is 53ºF and the average high is 74ºF.
