Nestled in the valley of the same name and surrounded by the nearby Simi Hills and the Santa Susana Mountains, Simi Valley plays host to the 13th annual running of its half marathon, 5K and 10K running event this year, with a route that takes runners along the Arroyo Simi Bike Path.

The home of the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library as well as the site where the former president was laid to rest following his 2004 state funeral in Washington, D.C., Simi Valley is home to just over 126,000 residents, many of whom work in nearby Los Angeles and cities further to the west.

As its name suggests, the city is located in a valley, and as a result, features largely flat terrain, though runners can expect very gradual uphill inclines and descents over the course of the half marathon.

Runners start all three races in the event at the city’s Rancho Simi Community Park, a roughly 33-acre park located near the intersection of Royal Avenue and Erringer Road. From there, runners head out on an out-and-back route that takes them first eastward along the Arryoy Simi Bike Path toward its easternmost point, which nearly reaches Rancho Santa Susana Community Park. After reaching the first turnaround point, runners then head back along the route they’ve just run, west in the direction of the bike path’s westernmost point, which takes them all the way to Madera Road. Once runners hit this second turnaround point, they then head back eastward toward Rancho Simi Park, back toward the starting line area for the race finish inside the park. Some proceeds from the race will go to benefit the Loving Heart Hospice Foundation, a locally-based nonprofit organization devoted to providing assistance to low-income patients and families in need of hospice care for themselves or loved ones, but who face difficulties in affording care.
