Note: The 2020 race is a virtual event.
This state’s famed Lakes Region is the setting for the Big Lake Half Marathon, which takes between 800 and 1,000 or more runners every year on a tour of the shores and hills of Lake Winnipesaukee, the largest lake in New Hampshire.
Bordered by the nearby White Mountains and Ossipee Mountain Range, the course for this point-to-point race starts at the Alton Central School and makes a narrow loop along the lake, passing by sights such as Sandy Point, Pumpkin Point and Mt. Major Park, and finishes a little over a mile from the starting line at the Alton Bay Community Center.
The USA Track & Field-certified race course includes numerous rolling hills and rises a total of just over 200 feet in elevation throughout the race, with its steepest hill occurring around mile 6, followed by a long gradual downhill over the next 2 miles.
Along the way pay close attention to our awesome aid stations as they are competing for your vote. We will welcome you back to Alton Bay with music, beer, and plenty of refreshments. Organizers add that while there is a 3 hour, 30 minute time limit for runners on the course, the race signs and water stops stay up until the last runner finishes (although the later water stops may be self-serve).
But the biggest attraction for this race is probably the scenery itself, which organizers justifiably describe as spectacular and which help make the half a great centerpiece or conclusion to a vacation in this beautiful part of New England. It’s a favorite destination for driving tours, skiing, hiking and nature walking, fall foliage tours and more.
