Set for its 11th annual running as summer is giving way to fall here in northern Minnesota’s Chippewa National Forest, the Bigfork Valley Challenge Races keeps its half marathon race distance and changed its 4.5-mile and 3-mile events to 10K and 5K races a few years back.
A small race that draws a few hundred runners each year, the Bigfork Valley Challenge offers gorgeous scenery along its 13.1-mile route, which will take runners along several miles of the Edge of the Wilderness National Scenic Byway that runs through this part of northern Minnesota, crosses over the Bigfork River and features stretches past several lakes just south of town.
The course for the half marathon features a combination of surfaces, from paved roads and bike paths to dirt roads and trails, as runners make their way off Highway 38 and along Farm Camp Road and County Highway 7.
Runners start the race on the access road to the Bigfork Valley Villa and Communities, near Pine Tree Drive. From there, they’ll follow a counter-clockwise loop that runs through Scenic State Park and back.
Race Weather & Climate
Located along the Edge of the Wilderness National Scenic Byway in the Chippewa National Forest of northern Minnesota, Bigfork typically sees September temperatures that average between 64°F and 44°F, while rainfall totals average just over 3 inches for the month.
On race day (Sept. 10), the average low is 46ºF and the average high is 66ºF.
