Set for its 7th annual running this year after more than 2,000 runners and walkers crossed the finish line at its 2016 running, the Blue Angels Rock ‘N’ Fly Half Marathon raised more than $50,000 last year for the two organizations it benefits, the Navy Marine Corps Relief Society and the Navy Ball.

The race is actually a rejuvenation of the Blue Angels Marathon, which had been held annually in Pensacola until it was cancelled by Hurricane Ivan back in 2004. Because the area was so devastated by the storm, the marathon remained in a state of suspension for years, until the commanding officers at Naval Air Station Pensacola decided to bring it back.

Runners start the course in the heart of the NAS, at the corner of Radford Boulevard and Fisher Avenue. From there, the course winds its way through the base for the first couple of miles along Duncan Road and Taylor Road, and then heads onto the Blue Angel Parkway for a long, several-miles out-and-back stretch.

During this stretch, runners will make their way past Forrest Sherman Field, the home base for the Blue Angels, officially known as the U.S. Navy Flight Demonstration Squadron. It’s also the place where the Navy trains its flight surgeons and aviation psychologists, and where aircraft maintenance crew get their training for the Marines and Coast Guard as well.

Once they make the long out-and-back along Blue Angel Parkway, runners will head back into the heart of the base for the final few miles, which unfold along Murray Road, Farrar Road, Warehouse Road and Cunningham Street.

Arrive early. Runners are encouraged to arrive at NAS Pensacola early, organizers note, to ensure they allow plenty of time to get through security before the race starts.

Runners are encouraged to don their best mullet or rocker gear, and there’s a competition for the best ‘do and costumes at the post-race awards.

Race Weather & Climate

Nestled along the Gulf Coast at the westernmost end of the Florida panhandle, roughly an hour’s drive from nearby Mobile, Ala., Pensacola typically sees some of its mildest weather of the year in March, which has brought record temperatures here as low as 22ºF (in 1980) and as high as 86ºF (in 2000).

On race day (March 21), the average low is 53ºF and the average high is 71ºF.
