Popular both in the winter for its ski resorts and in the summer for its plentiful hiking and mountain biking trails, rivers for fly fishing and just as a place to take in the gorgeous views of the mountains all around here at 9,600 feet above sea level, Breckenridge plays host to the Hunky Dory Half Marathon, a trail race that starts in the neighborhoods just east of this resort city’s Main Street.

The race, which is limited to the first 200 entrants, will take runners on an out-and-back course that starts and finishes at the intersection of Wellington Road and Reiling Road, at the local park known as Vista Point Park.

From there, runners will follow what is basically a counter-clockwise loop route along the trails that wind through the mountains just north of town, and then back again to the park for the race finish.

Along the way, runners will make their way along a series of well-established hiking trails, with names like the B&B Trail, Detroit Placer Trail, Sidedoor Trail and the Slalom Singletrack Trail, through mountainous areas around town like Prospect Hill and Gibson Hill, both of which lie above 10,000 feet.

Runners are advised to be ready for the elevation and the hills, though the scenery and the natural beauty of the wooded trails will of course be reward enough for the difficulty of the course.

Runners also should note that while organizers plan to have aid stations out on the half marathon route, stocked with water, food and refreshments, and first aid supplies, there will be no porta-potties or restrooms on the race route.

Race Weather & Climate

Nestled high up in the Rocky Mountains among the ski resorts just west of Denver, Breckenridge typically sees its warmest weather of the year in August, which also is the city’s second-wettest month of the year.

On race day (Aug. 6), the average low is 40ºF and the average high is 74ºF.
