runsignup blueRunners can expect a warm, friendly crowd here in this tiny southeastern Nebraska hamlet — which bills itself as “Nebraska’s oldest frontier town” — at the annual 4th of July running of the Brownville Freedom Run, which marks its 17th annual running this year with an out-and-back course that’s run alongside the banks of the Missouri River.

Between 100 and 200 runners and walkers crossed the finish line in all three distances combined each year, along a course that takes runners from Main Street in downtown Brownville near the Lewis & Clark Camp Site and then heads south along 648A Avenue.

Runners make their way south roughly in parallel with the nearby Missouri River, all the way down to the small community of Nemaha, which they’ll run through on the way to the half-way turnaround point.

The course reaches the midway point shortly after runners cross over the bridge on Highway 67 south of Nemaha. From there, the course then heads back north all the way to Brownville, as runners retrace their steps in reverse all the back to the race starting area for the finish line.

In recent years, the race had been run on the Silver Trace Trail north of Brownville; for the 2012 race, the race returned to the course that had been used in past years, before flooding along the Missouri River in 2011 forced the move away from this course.

Race Weather & Climate

Located in the state’s southeastern corner along the border between Nebraska and Missouri, roughly 75 miles south of Omaha, Brownville typically experiences its warmest (and wettest) weather in July, which has brought record temperatures here as low as 43 degrees (in 1972) and as high as 110 degrees (in 1980).

On race day (July 4), the average low is 66ºF and the average high is 89ºF.
