The deep woods forests, open farmlands and gently rolling hills of Ohio’s Cuyahoga Valley National Park are the setting for the late fall running of the Buckeye Half Marathon, which in previous years has also featured a 5K (that race distance was replaced with a half marathon relay for two-person teams in 2011).

From the starting area at the Howe Meadow Events site inside the park, between Everett Road and Ira Road, the race follows a winding out-and-back loop course through the park, along mostly flat terrain along Riverview Road, West Bath Road, Akron Peninsula Road and Bolanz Road.

Runners will make two loops around these roads before heading into the special events barn just off Tonkin Drive for the race finish.

The half-marathon is overwhelmingly the favorite of participants in this event — at the 2014 race, the half saw just over 450 runners cross the finish line.

The race features a scenic course through the park’s hiking and horseback riding trails, past its numerous lakes and ponds and along the winding Cuyahoga (an old Native American term for “crooked river”) that makes its way through the valley.

Race organizers emphasize that while this is one of Ohio’s smaller running events, there is no race day registration — you’ll need to make sure to sign up in advance using the registration link either below or on the website for Summit Athletic Club, which organizes and sponsors the race.
