runsignup blueSet for its 12th annual running this spring along the rolling soft dirt roads of this tiny town in central Montana, this race offers ample unspoiled natural beauty for runners to look on as they make their way around the area formerly known as the Ulm Pishkan State Park.

It’s now named the First Peoples Buffalo Jump State Park, in honor of what is one of North America’s largest bison cliff jumps.

Organized by the University of Great Falls in the nearby city of the same name, the race starts in the park, which lies just off Interstate 15, about 10 miles south of Great Falls. From there, runners follow the course along a mixture of rolling dirt roads and paved-surface roads, in and around the park.

Along the race route, runners expect to enjoy gorgeous views of the scenery all around the park, including the Big Belt Mountains and Little Belt Mountains in the distance, as well as the natural area known as Square Butte, which lies roughly 2,400 feet above the surrounding flat plains and is a frequent perch both for the herds of mountain goats in the area as well as many species of raptor birds.

Race Weather & Climate

Located in central northern Montana, roughly 11 miles southwest of Great Falls and about 80 miles north of Helena, the small town of Ulm typically experiences mild to moderately cool and occasionally still quite cold temperatures in the late spring season, and usually sees its heaviest precipitation during the month the race is held.

In May, the town’s average monthly temperatures range between 65°F and 38°F, while precipitation totals average just over 2.5 inches for the month.
