Described by the race organizers at the West Texas Running Club as “the most challenging half in the state,” the Buffalo Wallow Half Marathon & 2-Mile Race, which takes runners around Buffalo Springs Lake, saw just under 194 runners cross the finish line in both races combined at its 2014 running.

Home to the Red Raiders of Texas Tech University and famous as the birthplace of rock and roll pioneer Buddy Holly, Lubbock lies in the area of Texas known as Llano Estacado, and while most of the city is relatively flat, the course for the race features some significant hills.

The course for the race is a double-loop that takes runners around the outer perimeter road of Buffalo Springs Lake, starting near the park’s entry gates on High Meadow Road. From there, participants run a clockwise loop around the lake twice, as High Meadow Road gives way to Indian Trail on the lake’s eastern end and Comanche Drive along its southern and western shore. After completing both the first and second loops around the lake, runners finish the race on Pony Express Trail, along the peninsula of land that points out into the lake. Run entirely on paved roads around the lake, the 6.5-mile course takes runners both through the residential neighborhoods that lie near the lake as well as right along the shore, especially on the stretch of the course along the southern edge of the water. The race’s biggest hills occur just before the mile 3 marker, and again between the mile 5 and 9 markers.
