Around 2,000 runners and walkers from around the Bay Area come out to run the course each year at San Jose’s annual Sevathon Half Marathon, 10K & 5K, a walk and run-a-thon designed to help empower individuals from different background and strengthen the bonds among all people living in the local community.

The day-long celebration was developed to honor the birthdate and the good deeds done by Mahatma Gandhi and promotes charity and good will among participants. Race participants are encouraged to find sponsorships for their favorite charities and use the different race events as a way to raise awareness for their cause.

The race, which is open to anyone, and to any charity is put on annually by the Bay Area’s India Community Center (and was held in Sunnyvale before 2016).

Runners follow a course that begins along the Guadalupe River in downtown San Jose. The race begins with a quick loop through downtown San Jose before heading west past the SAP Center and making a loop through the area to the west of the arena. This section of the course consists mostly of light rolling hills.

From there, runners head north along the Guadalupe River Trail and continue their run along the Guadalupe River, passing local parks and San Jose International Airport. Much of this section of the course is a steady downhill along a paved trail, with a few minor uphill sections to keep things interesting.

After running to a turnaround point on the trail, runners head back toward the finish line at Guadalupe River Park. Thanks to the downhill nature of running to the turnaround point, much of the course’s last half is a very slow and steady uphill incline.

At the finish line at Arena Green East, runners can celebrate the Indian culture with live music and performances. The festival features different types of Indian food and activities for kids.

There will also be booths around the event with non-profits offering information and services. This Sevathon event is the largest community wide walkathon to create awareness for service and benefits numerous non-profits around the community.
