Nestled along the northern edge of New Hampshire’s largest lake, this small town of just over 4,000 souls is set to play host to the Castle in the Clouds Half Marathon & 5K Fun Run, a race that will start and finish at this historic landmark among the Ossipee Mountains, from the rocky outcropping once called the “Crow’s Nest.”
Called “one of the most beautiful and challenging race courses in New Hampshire” by its organizers, the race will start on the grounds of the Castle in the Clouds, a 16-room mansion set on a 5,500-acre mountain estate, which was designed by Boston architect J. Williams Beal and built from the materials of old structures on the mountain, including several old lodges and farm houses.
In their place was built the estate mansion tourists can visit today, as well as a greenhouse, a farm and a golf course.
All of this will form the backdrop for the race, which starts off in front of the mansion and then heads downhill for the first two miles, and then unfolds along an eight-mile-long loop, taking runners past a series of beautifully scenic waterfalls along the way.
After the eight-mile lollipop loop, runners then head back toward the Castle carriage house for the race finish line, this time uphill for the final two miles. That’ll be okay, because the views will be spectacular here high above the tree lines overlooking Lake Winnipesaukee.
