Get ready for a fun and frosty run at the annual Chicago Polar Dash Half Marathon, which also features what organizers call the Super Yeti Challenge — in which runners can compete in a 5K, 1800-meter and 13.1-miler all in the same morning. (Or substitute a 10K for the half, for simply the Yeti Challenge.)

The race follows an out and back course which mostly takes place on the Lakefront Trail along the water. Runners will pass through various parks, as they head south, away from the city.

They will cruise down the coast, staying on the same trail which runs parallel to South. Lake Shore Drive. When runners reach Harold Washington Playlot Park they will turn around and head back along the same route back to the finish area.

As runners approach the Museum campus, they will pass Soldier Field, home to the Chicago Bears, as well as pass the Field Museum, before wrapping around the Shedd Aquarium and heading up the Lakefront Trail. They will then run to Maggie Daley Park which is the last turnaround before heading back to the finish line, directly across from the start.

The half marathon course will have four aid stations as well as portable restrooms at miles 2, 4, 6 and 9. At the finish line, runners will be greeted with a stained-glass medal and a cup of hot chocolate.

Chip-timed and set to run on a USA Track & Field-certified route, the half marathon features a 9:00 AM starting time, and runners can pick up their race packets starting in late December — see the official race website for more details.

Last year’s race saw around 2,200 runners competing in all four events combined, with more than 540 runners competing in the half marathon race alone. If you’re looking for a fun winter race for this year, register for the Polar Dash Half Marathon or sign up for one of their fun Yeti Challenges.
