A beautiful race course through tree-lined residential streets, the leaves turning all different shades of red, gold and orange, and the opportunity to raise money for a worthy cause all combine to make Newton’s Chilly Half Marathon a worthwhile running event indeed

Set for its 8th annual running in 2016, after last year’s race saw just over 1,200 runners cross the finish line, the Chilly Half Marathon follows an out-and-back route that starts and finishes at Newton’s Newton South High School, where runners gather inside before the race start so they won’t have to wait outside too long in the cold before they get started.

Organized by the locally based Fattman Productions — which also stages the Newton 10K Run in June and the Bill’s Pizzeria 5K in October — the Chilly Half Marathon is designed both to offer runners a chance to run along some of the signature racing areas the Boston and Newton areas are known for (like Heartbreak Hill, the legendary stretch of the Boston Marathon course that runners in the Chilly Half get the chance to run downhill).

The race also offers runners a chance to give back by raising money for the local chapter of the American Liver Foundation, which raises money for research and advocates for patients dealing with all kinds of liver diseases, in an effort to improve their lives and educate the public about ways to prevent, treat and cure liver disease.

When runners sign up through the Liver Foundation’s Liver Life Challenge, they receive training and coaching from running instructors in the weeks and months leading up to the event, as well as support for their fundraising efforts.

They also get team uniforms (running singlets that identify them as part of the Liver Life Challenge to wear on the day of the race), and tips throughout the training on better nutrition for running.

The race itself takes runners through some of Newton’s most scenic neighborhoods and roads — the city was ranked #3 by Money Magazine among its top 10 places to live in the U.S. for 2010 — from Chestnut Hill Village up past Crystal Lake, and crossings over both Boylston Street and Beacon Street.

Runners also pass a number of local city parks along the way and get a chance to run past the campus of Boston College, when they’re making their way along Commonwealth Avenue between mile markers 8 and 9.

The home stretch of the course brings runners back southward along Lake Avenue, Clark Street and Parker Street — along the route they ran in the opposite direction early in the race — and back toward the high school for the race finish.

Race Weather & Climate

Located in eastern Massachusetts, just 10 miles from downtown Boston, the city of Newton typically experiences weather much like its larger neighboring city to the east, which is to say it normally sees quite chilly to sometimes quite cold weather in the mid-fall.

On race day (Nov. 13), the average low is 37ºF and the average high is 52ºF.
