Honoring the life of fallen Somerset County Sheriff’s Corporal Eugene “Gene” Cole—killed in the line of duty in April 2018—this annual road race began in 2019 and has become a powerful symbol of remembrance and community unity. Now heading into its seventh year, the event raises funds for the Eugene Cole Memorial Scholarship through the Maine Community Foundation, awarding financial aid to future law enforcement officers.
The course starts at Mill Stream Elementary School at 7:00 am EDT and offers both a 5K and a half marathon (notably run as a 13.12‑mile course in honor of Cole’s badge number, 1312). The route follows quiet country roads, crosses the memorial bridge named for Cole, and loops through Norridgewock’s heart—mixing paved surfaces with sentimental landmarks. It’s a modestly rolling terrain, more unlike a timing-chasing event and more about quiet reflection blended with challenge.
Aid stations appear approximately every 2 miles, staffed by family, friends, and law enforcement—many don Blue Line flags and gear in tribute. The finish area centers on a community celebration—blue-lined course welcome, medals for podium finishers, and music and snacks to close out.
This isn’t an elite-level half marathon. Instead, it’s a remembrance run: walkers, families, and kids (in the fun run) stroll alongside deputies, volunteers, and local first responders. An emblematic moment comes as runner Bruce Farrin, age 87, says he returns every year: “I like to help support the Cole family.”
