Few running race courses can offer the kind of scenery like that found at Washington state’s Dog Lake Half Marathon, which unfolds along a fast downhill route that starts in the Cascade range of the Snoqualmie National Forest, about 2 1/2 hours from Seattle.
With snow-capped mountain peaks all around, runners start the race near the stop sign at the Dog Creek Campground exit along Highway 12, just south of the lake known as Dog Lake.
From there, the course starts off first with a fast downhill stretch that lasts for the first few miles, taking runners east along Highway 12 in the direction of Rimrock Lake and Clear Lake.
Runners head onto the south shoulder along Highway 12, which they’ll follow for the next five miles until they reach Tieton Reservoir Road. There, they turn right and follow the road as it winds its way around Clear Lake, the start of a mostly flat stretch that lasts for the remainder of the race, after the downhill stretch at the beginning. The finish line lies at Silver Beach Resort near the western end of Rimrock Lake, near Trout Lodge.
The net elevation loss for the half marathon is more than 1,200 feet between the starting and finish lines — it’s about 2,000 feet for the full marathon, which drops from about 4,250 feet at the start to about 2,250 feet at its lowest point — and runners should expect to run the first five miles about a minute faster than their normal race pace, organizers note.
Runners also are encourage to wear brightly colored clothing especially if they’re running the full marathon, as the course will open to auto traffic at the Rimrock Tunnel section of the race, which occurs in the 26.2-mile course.
Most of the race takes place on paved asphalt roads, though about two miles in the stretch around Clear Lake are run on a combination gravel-and-dirt forest road.
