Around 200 runners cross the finish line each year at the annual springtime running of this race, which helps raise both money and awareness of the mission of the Dorchester County Family YMCA, which serves more than 3,000 in the local community through a range of athletic, fitness and mind-body health programs.
Runners start the half marathon — which follows an out-and-back course that past participants say is very flat and fast — at the Dorchester County Y, on the Somerset Avenue side of the facility.
From there, runners make their way out toward the banks of the Choptank River, one of the major tributaries off the Chesapeake here on the Delmarva Peninsula, and follows the same course that’s used at the annual June running of the Eagleman Ironman 70.3 Triathlon, which ends with a 13.1-mile run after a 1.2-mile swim and a 56-mile bike ride.
Thanks in part to its location along the river, most of the course follows a flat and fast route, and includes some stretches through the wooded forest areas just outside town. Once they make their way along the out-and-back route, runners finish the race back at the YMCA.
