runsignup-blueSet for its 9th annual running this year, the Duo at the Ledge Half Marathon, 10K & 5K Run/Walk takes runners on an out-and-back loop route through this small city that lies along the banks of the Grand River in Michigan’s Lower Peninsula, just west of Lansing.

It also offers runners something few other events do — a chance to run two races on the same day. Runners can choose between either the half marathon or the 5K, or they can choose to enter both, running in the 13.1-mile race and running or walking (or a mixture of both) the 5K.

While the 5K takes place entirely on paved, flat streets through the city, the half marathon takes runners on a combination of paved and dirt country roads, and is largely flat, though runners can expect some hills, particularly in the first couple and last couple of miles.

Both races share the same starting line area, at St. Michaels School on Edwards Street. From there, runners head out on what can be loosely termed a loop course route, in a clockwise direction leaving the school and heading out onto Hartel Road, St. Joseph Highway, Fees Road, Saginaw Highway and Oneida Road before turning onto Jefferson Highway for the final few miles that bring runners back into the city.

The race course features mostly residential neighborhoods in the early miles, followed by wide-open farm fields in the middle section of the race, as runners head down long straightaway stretches, particularly between mile markers 4 through 8, which coincides with a gradual uphill to the highest point of the race at about the mile 7 marker. Once runners pass mile 7, the course then begins a long, very gradual downhill over the next several miles.

The last two miles of the race bring runners into downtown Grand Ledge, which gets its name from its most famous landmark, a prehistoric set of sandstone and other rock ledge formations that are perched overlooking the Grand River, which flows through the city.

After a brief stretch next to the river flowing by on River Street, runners then head through the heart of downtown along Bridge Street, and then turn onto Scott Street for the home stretch back to the school for the race finish.
