runsignup blueStretching about 25 miles from the town of Eden southward to the city of West Bend here in southeastern Wisconsin, the former railroad corridor now known as the Eisenbahn Trail serves as the race route for the Adrenaline Marathon on the Eisenbahn Trail, which takes runners off the roadways and unfolds through the green landscapes of the state’s Kettle Moraine State Forest.

Now a popular trail for runners, walkers, hikers, cyclists and in-line skating, the Eisenbahn — named for the German word for “railroad,” in a nod both to its roots as a transportation corridor as well as to the area’s German heritage — also is open at various points to snowmobiles and winter all-terrain vehicles, and is made up of crushed limestone screenings for most of its 25 miles, with the exception of the lower 5 miles of the trail from Northwestern Avenue in West Bend to the trail’s southern head, which is paved.

Runners in all three races follow an out-and-back course that starts and finishes in downtown West Bend, and heads out onto the Eisenbahn Trail from there. The half marathon turnaround point will be where the starting line for the half was last year, in the town of Kewaskum, along Auburn Ashford Road.

Along the half marathon route, which leaves the starting line on Auburn Ashford Road and then turns onto Moraine Court before heading onto the Eisenbahn Trail, runners will make their way through long stretches of rural farmlands and meadows, cross creeks and run through downtown West Bend on their way toward the finish line at the YMCA.

The elevation change for the race follows what is basically a long, slow and gradual descent from the start to the finish line, one that runners probably won’t even notice along the half marathon’s 13.1 miles, as the starting line area lies at just over 1,000 feet above sea level, while the finish line lies at about 900 feet.

Throughout most of the course, runners can expect to run over terrain made up of limestone screenings, with only the final few miles of the course run on paved asphalt surfaces.
