Set for its 8th annual running this year on the latter half of July, the Essex Half Marathon takes runners on a looping out-and-back course along the backcountry roads just outside the small northeastern Vermont village of Essex Junction, which lies just a short drive east from nearby Burlington along Lake Champlain.

The race is set to start at Essex High School at 2 Educational Drive, where runners will start the race at the front of the campus and finish on the high school’s athletic track, where they’ll make a loop all the way around before crossing the finish line.

Along the course, runners can expect a combination of paved and dirt roads, especially in the stretch along Lost Nation Road between mile markers 4 and 6.

Here’s how Mark Brislin, the assistant director for the Essex Junction Recreation and Parks department, described the course in an email to HalfMarathons.Net:

“Runners will love this out and back course with a loop in the middle. The race starts at the Essex High School before bringing racers to the country back roads of Essex. Runners will feel the comfort of the dirt roads as they run their way up and down the hills of Lost Nation Road.

“The turn-around spot is the end of Lost Nation Road, at the intersection of Lost Nation and Old Stage Road. From there, runners will continue back on Lost Nation Road before turning onto Lamore Road and cruising south for the next few miles toward the finish.

As they sprint toward the finish line on the high school track, racers will hear the roar of the crowd cheering them on, in front of the grandstand with their friends, loved ones, and fans to cheer them on.

At the race’s 5th annual running in 2016, more than 100 runners crossed the finish line. The course time limit for the race will be 3 hours, race organizers add, and after that time on-course support will no longer be available. Race day registration will be available, provided the event has not already sold out.
