Note: The 2020 race has been cancelled.
With a course that takes runners through the Red Rock National Conservation Area located about 15 miles west of Las Vegas, the race course area for the Flight of Fire Half Marathon can be easily seen from the Strip in Las Vegas and is visited by well over a million people each year.
Rock formations over 3,000 feet make the area a popular spot for rock climbers and hikers, and its highest point is La Madre Mountain at 8,154 feet. Millions of years of plate shifting and climate change have created unique landscapes showcasing unique geological formations, and runners will have an opportunity to get up close and personal with this pristine piece of land, as much of the area in inaccessible by car.
Runners have 3 hours to complete the half-marathon course, which is full of steady elevation hikes along beautiful trails. Racers will go out in waves to ensure that there is plenty of space for everyone, and to keep the narrow trails easier to navigate.
All racers will line up at the Red Rock Conservation Area visitors center and start the race by traveling clockwise on the Moenkopi Loop, which offers views of Calico Hills and the nearby Spring Mountains and La Madre Mountains.
Runners will then hop onto the Grand Circle Loop which will lead them to the White Rock-Willow Springs Trail. Watch out for wildlife along the way as many animals make this area their home year-round. Bighorn sheep are commonly sighted along this stretch of the park’s trails.
Runners will then travel along the White Rock dirt road and back onto the Grand Circle Loop. The Calico Hills trail offers great vistas of the Calico Hills and is a favorite among rock climbers. Moderate climbs along the trail are to be expected, but runners need to keep their energy up to make it to the final portion of the race.
Runners will then retrace their steps on the Moenkopi Loop and enjoy their final steps among spectacular views as they make their way towards the visitor center.
