Now set for its 5th annual running at the Florida Sheriff’s Youth Ranch just south of the Holton Creek Conservation Area near Live Oak, this marathon, half marathon, 10K and 5K race — formerly known as the State of Mind Sports Marathon races — draws around a couple hundred runners each year for a race that unfolds near Sarasota on Florida’s Gulf coast.
Each of the races in the event will start and finish at the youth ranch, which was established in the late 1950s as a home for troubled boys from around the area, and today provides both education and recreation with swimming, baseball, canoeing, arts and crafts and volleyball activities for the more than 80 boys who live at the ranch.
Since its founding, the ranch has expanded its programs to five additional locations around the state.
The ranch is located roughly 10 miles north of the town of Live Oak, at 1813 Cecil Webb Place, just south of the more than 2,500-acre Holton Creek Conservation Area park, home to ample trails for hiking, horseback riding and running as well as areas for hunting and fishing.
