Get ready for a net downhill course that should unfold in great weather at the Folsom Blues Breakout 13.1, a race with a half marathon, relay and 5K that is inspired by the legendary Johnny Cash song “Folsom Prison Blues,” and takes place in a city with plentiful shopping and restaurants that’s also near some incredible wineries.

The race starts on the Johnny Cash Bridge (aka Folsom Lake Crossing) and travels downhill and around Lake Natoma. Runners start west along Folsom Lake Crossing and make a left onto Folsom-Auburn Road. The first couple of miles are the biggest descents and runners will be able to fall into race pace quickly.

Once the course hits the intersection with Greenback Lane just before the second mile marker, runners will make a left. A quick right will then take racers onto the American River Bike Trail.

The trail hugs the shoreline of Lake Natoma and offers runners views of the water as they make their way south. The third mile takes runners through Negro Bar State Park and the fourth mile cuts through Rollingwood Bluffs.

As runners pass the 5th and 6th mile markers, they will be traversing the Mississippi Bar area. The American River Trail will continue to head west as racers hit the halfway point. Just past the 7th mile marker, runners will approach Hazel Avenue and continue the course by crossing over Lake Natoma.

Just past mile 8, runners will run through the Nimbus Dam Recreational Area and then make their way northeast to the Willow Creek Recreation Area. Past the 10th mile marker, runners will take the trail north for the final 5K. This section of the trail takes runners through the Lake Forest Industrial Park and Folsom Junction neighborhoods.

The final mile follows the curve of the lake as the course continues along the American River Bike Trail. Runners will begin to hear the sights and sounds of downtown as they make their way towards the finish line just beyond Folsom Boulevard

All runners who finish the course in 3 hours and 30 minutes or less will receive a medallion. Awards will be given to the top 3 overall male and female finishers along with the top 3 in each age group.
