Nestled along the winding Rock River that flows through this part of southern Wisconsin and empties into Lake Koshkonong just south of town, the city of Fort Atkinson is set to host the 7th and final annual running of its Fort Atkinson Half Marathon & 5K, as spring is giving way to summer here in this city known for its historic downtown buildings and scenic riverwalk.
The 13.1-mile course for the half marathon will follow a winding route through the city from the starting line at Fort Atkinson’s Luther Elementary School, on Park Street just down the road from Jones Park.
From there, runners can expect to run along stretches that include the downtown riverwalk and the historic forts from which the city gets its name, which served as outposts for the U.S. military during the Black Hawk War in the early 1830s.
Known for its plentiful dairy farms, scenic rolling country roads and ample opportunities for boating, kayaking and canoeing along its rivers and the nearby Lake Koshkonong, Fort Atkinson offers a smaller, more quaint getaway from the nearby cities of Madison and Milwaukee, and plenty of small-town scenery for the race.
The scheduled starting time for the race is 7:00 AM, and runners can expect a field of more than 500 runners at the event — past year’s races have seen roughly 400 runners cross the finish line in the half marathon alone.
Race Weather & Climate
Located in the southeastern corner of Wisconsin, about 34 miles east of Madison and about 57 miles west of Milwaukee, the city of Fort Atkinson typically experiences mild to moderately warm conditions in the early summer, and usually sees its wettest weather in the summer months.
On race day (June 18), the average low is 57ºF and the average high is 81ºF.
