Every year, nearly 2 million people come from all over the country to visit Estero Island and Fort Myers Beach, which has a year-round population of several thousand and spans just 3 square miles here along San Carlos Bay near the mouth of the Caloosahatchee River and its much larger neighboring cities of Fort Myers and Cape Coral.
This fall, this small beach town — which is known around the world for its annual sand sculpting contest every November — plays host to the fifth running of the Fort Myers Beach Marathon, Half Marathon and 5K race, along an out-and-back course that will take runners on the palm tree lined McGregor Blvd. and the city’s river district.
Both race start together and head off east to downtown on Edwards to Fowler before looping back to W. First to Mcgregor Blvd. The race then features a 5 mile scenic loop where runners will run on palm tree lined streets and pass estates like the Ford and Edison homes. While the marathoners run a second time around this loop, the half marathon runners will finish their loop and head to the finish at Centennial Park on Edwards Dr.
All runners will receive a race technical t-shirt and goody bag at the race registration expo, and all finishers will receive a medal when they cross the finish line. Runners will have to complete the marathon within the course time limit of 6 hours in order to be counted as an official finisher, organizers add.
