Set for its 11th annual running along the scenic wooded trails and city streets of this small southeastern Minnesota city, the From The Heart Half Marathon, Relay & 5K Run/Walk draws several hundred runners each year for an out-and-back race that unfolds through local parks, along lakeside trails and through residential neighborhoods.

Designed as a way to highlight the struggles of families dealing with cancer, the race honors two local families like (a few years back) the Harlickers and the Olsons, both of whom include family members facing cancer and dealing with the treatments of chemotherapy, hospitalization and a range of cancer-fighting medications.

Both races share the same starting line, along the shore of Owatonna’s Lake Kohlmier, and the half marathon takes runners on a route that winds first south along Lake Kohlmier and then northeastward out from the lakeshore and into the city.

Along the USATF-certified course, which takes runners through local parks including portions of Morehouse Park, Dartts Park and Mineral Springs Park, runners will get to run through forested stretches as well as areas out in the open air and sun, and can expect the hilliest stretches in the middle of the race’s 13.1 miles, between mile markers 4 and 8.

Once they reach the midpoint of the race, runners make their way around the Brooktree Golf Course and then run through Mineral Springs Park — where the statue of Princess Owatonna stands today, who according to local legend was brought by her father Chief Wabena to be healed by the natural springs in the park.

After that, runners then head back onto stretches of the course they’ve already run for the last few miles to the finish line back at Lake Kohlmier, along Cherry Street, North Street and the trails along the waterways leading back to the lake.

Race Weather & Climate

Located in the southeastern part of the state, down Interstate 35 about 65 miles south of the Minneapolis-St. Paul area, Owatonna typically sees mild to moderately cool (and occasionally still cold) weather in May, which has brought record temperatures here as low as 20ºF (in 1967) and as high as 96ºF (in 1978).

On race day (May 4), the average low is 42ºF and the average high is 64ºF.
