Organized by the western Michigan-based athletic store chain Gazelle Sports in partnership with Nike Inc., the seventh annual Gazelle Girl Half Marathon, 10K and 5K kicks off from the starting line in downtown Grand Rapids, for a race that’s designed to encourage new runners to develop an active lifestyle.
The race follows an out-and-back course that starts and finishes in downtown Grand Rapids at Calder Plaza, where you can see La Grande Vitesse, the iconic red-orange sculpture that’s known around the world.
It lies just blocks from Rosa Parks Circle, the monument dedicated to the civil rights pioneer from Montgomery, Ala., and designed by Maya Lin, the famed architect of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C.
From there, runners will make a loop through the city and then head north toward Riverside Park, the big park on the bend in the Grand River that flows right through the heart of the city.
They’ll also spend a stretch on the White Pine Trail before making the turn to head back through downtown and south back toward the finish line at Calder Plaza.
More than 2,200 women came out and crossed the finish line in both the half marathon and 5K combined in 2014, including more than 1,500 runners in the half marathon alone.
