Launched in 2024 by race directors David and Laura McIntyre and backed by Lifestyle Sports Global, this event marks Bangor’s first USATF‑sanctioned and Boston‑certified half marathon and marathon. Now heading into its second running, the race builds on last year’s inaugural excitement when over 300 runners from 33 states and four countries took on the wet, 170‑foot elevation‑profile course.
Expect a well‑marked, scenic out‑and‑back course that starts near the iconic Paul Bunyan statue on Main Street, follows the urban downtown streets, extends along Valley Avenue to Broadway with a turnaround in Kenduskeag, and finishes at the waterfront near Geaghan’s restaurant. Despite occasional summer rain, many runners actually appreciate the cooler conditions it brings.
Aid stations are well stocked—and there’s even a personalized “bottle service” option for those who drop off their water bottles at the start. And after crossing the finish line, participants can enjoy a vendor village and beverage garden courtesy of Geaghan’s—a perfect finish-line hangout spot.
The event also features prize money and a special “Run the Highlands” medal for runners who complete both Bangor and Lincoln events. In 2025, the race supports the Maine Veterans Project and Heart of Maine United Way, donating $5 per registration and 10% of donations.
As race organizer Dave McIntyre summed up on race day:
“Today is awesome. Really good vibes today…everybody is really pumped up and having a great time here.”
Perfect for runners seeking a certified, PR‑friendly course without time limits, blended with scenic Maine charm, civic pride, and solid race-day amenities.
