Sunday, October 15, 2023 • Syracuse, NY • Course Map

runsignup blueFilled with long stretches along the shoreline of Onandaga Lake, which takes runners through a combination of lakeside parkland areas and residential neighborhood streets, Syracuse’s Great New York State Marathon, Half Marathon & 10K (known as the Empire State Marathon, Half Marathon & 10K before 2021) makes its 12th annual running this year.

Designed to take advantage of this part of central New York state’s fall season — when the leaves turn brilliant shades of red, gold, brown and orange — the half marathon race follows a loop course that starts and finishes at the Chevy Court on the New York State Fairgrounds, about six weeks after the state fair ends.

From there, the course heads on a counterclockwise loop around Onondaga Lake. Much of the course will be right next to the lake and its tree-lined roads.

During the middle section of the course, the course heads northwest largely along the Onondaga Lake Parkway, the roadway that runs through Onondaga Lake County Park, which is sometimes called the “Central Park of Central New York” for its miles of paved trails, shaded pathways and approximately seven miles of trees and greenspace areas along the lakeshore.

Runners follow the route as it winds through the park and then heads into Long Branch Park at the northwestern end of the lake.

Once there, they continue the clockwise loop along the western side of the lake and make their way back to the fairgrounds and the finish line, where a recovery lounge, food, and live music await.

There won’t be an early start for walkers, organizers note, but the course time limits are 7 hours for the full marathon and 6.5 hours for the half marathon.
